Q: How to Remove and Install an Airbag Module and Steering Wheel?
A: To remove the airbag module and steering wheel, start by parking the vehicle with the front wheels straight ahead. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least two minutes for the system to discharge. Remove the two screws retaining the airbag module to the steering wheel and take out the airbag module. Remove the lock from the airbag clock-spring electrical connector and disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the airbag module. Remove the screws attaching the speed control switches on the rear of the steering wheel and disconnect the clock spring and horn ground wire. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut and mark the steering column shaft and wheel for correct positioning. Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel. To install the steering wheel, ensure the airbag clock spring is centered by turning it clockwise until it stops and then counter-clockwise until yellow appears in the centering window. Lower the steering wheel into position, aligning the marks and engaging the flats on the hub with the flats on the clock spring. Tighten the nut to the specified torque. Route and reconnect electrical connectors, such as the speed control switch leads, and install the speed control switches. Plug in the horn and airbag module connectors and press the speed control switches into the retaining channels. Connect the clock spring electrical leads to the speed control switches and insert the locking tab in the back of the airbag module connector. Align the airbag module alignment pins with the mating hole and slot in the steering wheel and tighten the retaining bolts. Finally, reapply battery power by installing the remote ground cable on the ground stud.
