To operate and check the power brake booster, start the engine and depress the pedal. If the pedal goes down slightly, the operation is normal. Then, depress the brake pedal multiple times with the engine running and ensure that there is no change in the pedal reserve distance. To check the airtightness, start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes. Slowly depress the brake pedal several times and observe if the pedal goes down farther the first time but gradually rises after the second or third depression, indicating an airtight booster. Additionally, depress the brake pedal while the engine is running and stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there is no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. For removal, pump the pedal several times with the engine off to remove any vacuum from the booster. Disconnect the cable from the remote ground terminal or battery. Unbolt the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on 2014 and earlier models or the Power Distribution Center (PDC) and its bracket on 2015 and later models. Remove the Anti-lock Brake System Integrated Control Unit (ICU). Clean the area where the master cylinder attaches to the power brake booster. Remove the master cylinder and disconnect the brake lines from the junction block below the power brake booster, plugging all open lines. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the check valve on the outside of the brake booster. Under the dash, disconnect and remove the brake light switch. Disconnect the brake pedal pushrod from the top of the brake pedal and replace the retaining clip. Remove the nuts attaching the booster to the firewall. Finally, carefully withdraw the brake booster unit from the firewall and out of the engine compartment. To install the booster, place it into position on the firewall and tighten the retaining nuts. Connect the brake pedal to the brake booster pushrod using a new retaining clip. Install a new vacuum seal on the master cylinder before reinstalling it to the power brake booster. Bleed the brake system and test the operation of the brakes before normal operation.
