Q:
How to Replace the Parking Brake Cables? Posted by Customer
A:
The front cable cannot be replaced separately and must be replaced along with the parking brake lever assembly. To remove the rear cables, the center console must be removed and the parking brake lever should be in the fully released position. The output cable retaining clip should be pried off and the output cable detached from the rear cable tension equalizer. Both rear brake cables should be disconnected from the cable tension equalizer. The rear seat assembly and rear door sill scuff plates should be removed to expose the parking brake cables. The parking brake cable routing clip should be removed from the floor pan. The retaining tabs of the cable housing should be compressed and the cable should be pulled through the opening in the center console bracket. The rear drum brake shoes should be removed and the retaining tabs of the cable housing should be compressed again to pull the cable through the brake backing plate. The cable brackets should be removed from the frame rail and the cable sealing grommet should be removed from the floor pan. Finally, the cable assembly can be removed from the vehicle. To install the new cable, the front end should be inserted through the hole in the floor pan and the rear end should be inserted through the hole in the brake assembly backing plate. The cable brackets should be installed onto the frame rail and tightened securely. The cable end should be connected to the parking brake lever on the trailing brake shoe and the rear brake assembly should be reassembled. The parking brake cable grommet should be pulled hard to ensure it is fully seated to the floor pan. The cable should be installed into its appropriate position in the center console bracket and the cable retainers should hold it firmly in place. The cables should be secured to the floor pan with the routing clip. The carpet should be placed back into position and the rear door opening sill scuff plates should be installed. The rear seat assembly should be installed and both rear brake cables should be connected to the new cable tension equalizer. The parking brake lever output cable should be installed into the cable tension equalizer and secured with a new retaining clip. Before adjusting the parking brake cables, the engine should be started and the brake pedal should be fully depressed two or three times to adjust the rear brakes. Finally, the parking brake cable should be adjusted.
