Q:
How to check and replace the ignition coil on Jeep Comanche? Posted by Customer
A:
To check and replace the ignition coil on all models except 2000 and later inline six-cylinder models, start by detaching the negative battery cable and locating the ignition coil, which is typically on the right side of the engine compartment. If needed, remove the coil by unscrewing the mounting bracket bolts. If not removed, disconnect the wires from the high voltage and primary terminals of the coil. Then, using an ohmmeter set on the high resistance scale, connect the positive lead to the primary terminal and the negative lead to ground; it should indicate infinite resistance. Next, using the low resistance scale, connect the ohmmeter positive lead to the positive primary terminal and the negative lead to the negative terminal; it should indicate zero or close to zero resistance. Finally, using the high resistance scale, connect the ohmmeter negative lead to the negative primary terminal and the positive lead to the high voltage terminal; it should not indicate infinite resistance. Replace the coil if any of these tests fail. For replacement, if not already done, detach the wires from the high voltage and primary terminals of the coil and also disconnect the Ignition Control Module (ICM) wire connectors if they are present. Remove the coil mounting bracket bolts and detach the coil. Installation is the reverse of removal. For 2000 and later inline six-cylinder models, begin by removing the ignition coil rail assembly and clean it, checking for any cracks or damage. Also, clean the coil primary terminals and inspect the springs and spark plug boots for damage. Replace the coil rail assembly if springs or spark plug boots are damaged or if the coil is found to be defective during subsequent tests. Check the coil primary resistance by connecting an ohmmeter to terminals no. 2 and 1, 2 and 3, and 2 and 4 of the coil connector, with each measurement representing the primary resistance of one of the three coils in the coil rail assembly. The coil resistance should fall within the specified ranges for primary and secondary sides; if not, replace the ignition coil rail assembly. Note that the entire assembly must be replaced if only one coil is defective. For replacement, remove the ignition coil rail assembly mounting bolts, carefully work the spark plug boots off the spark plugs, and disconnect the electrical connector from the coil rail. Then, remove the ignition coil rail assembly, and when installing the new one, make sure all spark plug boots are properly seated over the spark plugs. Secure the assembly with the mounting bolts, reconnect the electrical connector, and ensure it's locked in place.

Q:
How do you replace the ignition coil on 1999 and earlier 2002 Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the ignition coil on 1999 and earlier models, start by detaching the cable from the negative battery terminal. Mark the wires and terminals with numbered tape, then remove the primary wires and high-tension cable from the coil. Disconnect the coil mounting bracket and remove the coil/bracket assembly. Clean the outer case and check for damage. Clean the coil primary terminals and check for corrosion. Check the coil primary resistance by attaching an ohmmeter to the positive and negative terminals. Check the coil secondary resistance by hooking one ohmmeter lead to the primary terminals and the other to the high-tension terminal. If the resistances are not as specified, replace the coil. Install the new coil and hook up the wires, then reattach the cable to the negative battery terminal.
