Q:
How to replace the pick-up coil in a distributor? Posted by Customer
A:
Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the distributor cap and rotor. Detach the pick-up coil leads from the module. Connect one lead of an ohmmeter to one terminal of the pick-up coil lead and the other to ground as shown. Flex the leads by hand to check for intermittent opens. The ohmmeter should indicate infinite resistance at all times. If it doesn't, the pick-up coil is defective and must be replaced. Connect the ohmmeter leads to both terminals of the pick-up coil. Flex the leads by hand to check for intermittent opens. The ohmmeter should read one steady value between 500 and 1500 ohms as the leads are flexed by hand. If it doesn't, the pick-up coil is defective and must be replaced. Remove the distributor. Remove the two rotor mounting screws and remove the rotor. Disconnect the pick-up coil leads from the module. On models with a Hall-effect switch, remove the switch retaining screws and the switch. Mark the distributor gear and shaft so they can be reassembled in the same position. Carefully mount the distributor in a soft-jawed vise and, using a hammer and punch, remove the roll pin from the distributor shaft and gear. Remove the gear and washers from the shaft. Carefully pull the shaft out through the top of the distributor. Remove the "C" washer retaining ring at the center of the distributor and remove the pick-up coil. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure to use a new roll pin when installing the drive gear on the shaft.

Q:
How do you check and replace the ignition coil for the 1990 Jeep Comanche? Posted by Customer
A:
To check and replace the ignition coil on models except for 2000 and later inline six-cylinder models, follow these steps:a. Start by detaching the negative battery cable.b. Locate the ignition coil, typically found on the right side of the engine compartment.c. If needed, remove the coil by unscrewing the mounting bracket bolts.d. If the coil is not removed, disconnect the wires from the high voltage and primary terminals of the coil.e. Use an ohmmeter set on the high resistance scale to perform resistance tests.f. Test the primary terminal to ground, which should indicate infinite resistance.g. Test the positive primary terminal to the negative terminal, which should indicate zero or close to zero resistance.h. Test the negative primary terminal to the high voltage terminal, which should not indicate infinite resistance.i. Replace the coil if any of these tests fail.j. For replacement,if not. f. Note that the entire assembly must be replaced if only one coil is defective. g. For replacement, remove the ignition coil rail assembly mounting bolts, carefully work the spark plug boots off the spark plugs, and disconnect the electrical connector from the coil rail. h. Then, remove the ignition coil rail assembly, and when installing the new one, make sure all spark plug boots are properly seated over the spark plugs. i. Secure the assembly with the mounting bolts, reconnect the electrical connector, and ensure it's locked in place.

Q:
How do you replace the ignition coil on 2000 through 2006 six-cylinder 2005 Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
A:
To replace the ignition coil on 2000 through 2006 six-cylinder models, remove the ignition coil rail assembly and clean the cases. Check the coil primary resistance by connecting an ohmmeter to the coil connector terminals. Compare the measurements to the specified resistance values. If the resistance is not as specified, replace the coil rail assembly. To replace the assembly, remove the mounting bolts and carefully work the spark plug boots off the spark plugs. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the coil rail assembly. When installing the new coil rail, position the spark plug boots over the spark plugs and press the assembly down until the boots are seated. Install the mounting bolts and tighten them securely. Connect the electrical connector and lock it in place.
