When replacing entire components, additional refrigerant oil must be added equal to the amount that is removed with the component being replaced. Read the label on the oil container to verify compatibility with the R-134a or R-1234yf system before adding any to the system. The receiver-drier should always be replaced when the compressor is replaced. To remove the compressor, have the system discharged and the refrigerant recovered by an air conditioning technician. Disconnect the negative battery cable and raise the front of the vehicle. Remove the front wheels and wheel well splash shields, as well as the accessory drivebelt. Disconnect the wire harness connected to the air conditioning compressor. Remove the fasteners securing the air conditioning lines to the compressor and detach the refrigerant lines. Plug all open fittings to prevent dirt and moisture entry. Remove the compressor mounting fasteners and lower the compressor from the vehicle. If installing a new compressor, pour out the oil from the old compressor into a graduated container and add that amount of new refrigerant oil to the new compressor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Install new O-rings onto the line fittings and lightly coat them with the correct refrigerant oil. Have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
