How to Remove a Heater Core from an HVAC Housing? Posted by Customer
A:
Have the air conditioning system discharged by a dealer service department or by an automotive air conditioning shop before proceeding. Drain the cooling system and then disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outlet pipes at the firewall. Trace the heater hoses to the firewall, remove the hose clamps and then disconnect the hoses from the heater core pipes. Remove the coolant reservoir. Remove the instrument panel. Working in the engine compartment, disconnect the refrigerant line connector block, if equipped. First, remove the mounting bolt from the air conditioning line connector and then remove the Torx bolts from the expansion valve. Working in the passenger compartment, disconnect the expansion valve from the evaporator. Disconnect the vacuum lines from the brake power booster. Working in the engine compartment, remove the drain tube from the lower section of the heater/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) housing. Look for the evaporator drain hose on the firewall in the engine compartment; remove the hose clamp and simply pull it off. Working in the passenger compartment, remove the defroster duct from the HVAC housing. Remove the defroster duct from the HVAC assembly. Working in the engine compartment, remove the HVAC mounting nuts. Remove the HVAC housing mounting bolts from the engine compartment. Working in the passenger compartment, first remove the right side mounting screw from the HVAC housing then remove the remaining fasteners. Remove the bolts that mount the HVAC assembly to the upper dash support structure. Lift the HVAC housing from the passenger compartment. Remove the foam seal from the air distribution outlet, the evaporator lines and the heater core tubes. Cut the foam seal around the evaporator lines parallel with the case halves. Cut the foam seal at the air distribution outlet in line with the HVAC housing seams. Remove the upper and lower heater case mounting screws and clips. Remove the upper and lower heater case mounting screws. Remove the clips that secure the case halves together. Pull the heater core out of the housing. Lift the top half of the HVAC housing to expose the heater core, the evaporator and the blower fan. If the old heater core has been leaking, clean the coolant from the housing. Installation is the reverse of removal. Don't forget to reconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses at the firewall. Refill the cooling system when you're done.
