Q:
How Do You Remove the Rack And Pinion? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Apply the parking brake and remove the wheels. If equipped with a skid plate, remove it. For models with hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering gear, remove the intermediate shaft coupler pinch bolt and unscrew the pressure and return line fittings from the power steering gear. Position a drain pan under the rack and pinion and disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines. Cap the lines to prevent leakage. Detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles. Unscrew the mounting bolts and lower the rack and pinion from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten the rack and pinion mounting bolts and the intermediate shaft coupler pinch bolt. For models with electric power steering (EPS rack-and-pinion steering gear), disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the intermediate shaft coupler pinch bolt, and disconnect the EPS electrical connector at the rack and pinion. Detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles and remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts to slide the gear out from under the stabilizer bar. Complete the calibration procedure after installation. For models with recirculating ball steering gear, raise the front of the vehicle, support it on jackstands, and lock the steering wheel in place. Remove the intermediate shaft coupler pinch bolt and unscrew the power steering lines from the rack and pinion. Separate the drag link from the Pitman arm. Remove the rack and pinion retaining bolts from the frame rail and detach the rack and pinion from the frame. If installing a new rack and pinion or Pitman arm, remove the Pitman arm from the rack and pinion sector shaft. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten the rack and pinion mounting bolts and the intermediate shaft coupler pinch bolt. Re-check the power steering fluid level after the installation.
