Q:
What Is the Maintenance Required for a Catalytic Converter on Dodge Daytona? Posted by Customer
A:
The catalytic converter is a component designed to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide pollutants in the exhaust gases. It oxidizes these components, converting them into water and carbon dioxide. However, if large amounts of unburned gasoline enter the catalyst, it can overheat and cause a fire. To prevent this, it is important to use only unleaded gasoline, avoid prolonged idling, not run the engine with a nearly empty fuel tank, avoid prolonging engine compression checks, and avoid coasting with the ignition turned off. The catalytic converter requires little maintenance, but should be inspected whenever the vehicle is raised on a lift or if the exhaust system is checked or serviced. During inspection, all connections in the exhaust pipe assembly should be checked for looseness and damage, as well as the clamps for damage, cracks, and missing fasteners. The rubber hangers should also be checked for cracks. The converter itself should be checked for damage and dents that could affect performance and be hazardous to health. The heat shields under the converter and the heat insulator above it should also be inspected for damage and loose fasteners. If component replacement is necessary, it is important to wait until the complete exhaust system is cool before attempting to remove the catalytic converter. The vehicle should be raised and securely supported on jackstands, and penetrating oil should be applied to the clamp bolts. After several minutes, the bolts and rubber hangers can be removed, and the converter can be separated from the exhaust pipe. Any old gaskets stuck to the pipes should be removed. During installation, new exhaust pipe gaskets should be used, and the clamp nuts should be tightened to the specified torque. Finally, the engine should be started and carefully checked for exhaust leaks.

Q:
What is the recommended action for replacing a catalytic converter due to a federally mandated extended warranty on Jeep Comanche? Posted by Customer
A:
Because of a Federally mandated extended warranty which covers emissions-related components such as the catalytic converter, it is recommended to check with a dealer service department before replacing the converter at your own expense. The catalytic converter is an emission control device that reduces pollutants from the exhaust gas stream. There are two types of converters: the conventional oxidation catalyst and the three-way catalyst. If you suspect that the converter is malfunctioning, take it to a dealer or authorized emissions inspection facility for diagnosis and repair. When servicing under body components, check the converter for leaks, corrosion, dents, and other damage. If damage is found, the converter should be replaced. Plugged converters can be diagnosed using a vacuum gauge to check for a blocked exhaust. If the gauge does not show a significant increase in pressure, or if it hovers around its highest reading before returning, the exhaust system or the converter may be plugged.
