Partially drain the cooling system to a level slightly below the cylinder heads. For V6 engines, disconnect the electrical connector from the ECT sensor located at the front of the lower intake manifold. Use a deep socket to unscrew the ECT sensor from the lower intake manifold. Wrap the threads of the ECT sensor with Teflon sealing tape before installing it. Refill the cooling system. For V8 engines, remove the accessory drivebelt and unbolt the air conditioning compressor without disconnecting any air conditioning fittings. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ECT sensor located on the front end of the engine block. Use a deep socket to unscrew the ECT sensor from the intake manifold. Wrap the threads of the ECT sensor with Teflon sealing tape before installing it. Refill the cooling system.

The ECT sensor is located at the right end of the engine on the coolant outlet housing.

If an overheating indication occurs, check the coolant level and ensure all connectors in the wiring harness between the sending unit and the indicator light or gauge are tight.

When the ignition switch is turned to START and the starter motor is turning, the indicator light (if equipped) should come on, indicating a good bulb.

Before installing the sensor, wrap the threads with Teflon sealing tape to prevent leaks.

For the coolant temperature sensor, open the radiator cap, squeeze the upper radiator hose, reinstall the cap, unplug the electrical connector, unscrew the sensor, coat the threads of the new sensor, install it securely, and check the coolant level.

The coolant temperature indicator system includes a warning light or temperature gauge on the dash and a coolant temperature sending unit on the engine. The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, which also functions as the coolant temperature sending unit, provides information to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If an overheating indication occurs, check the coolant level and ensure all connectors in the wiring harness are tight. When the ignition switch is turned to START, the indicator light should come on, indicating a functioning bulb. If the light doesn't come on, it could be due to a burned-out bulb, faulty ignition switch, or an open circuit. Once the engine starts, the indicator light should go out and remain off unless the engine overheats. If the light doesn't go out, check for any stored trouble codes in the PCM. If the engine tends to overheat easily, check the coolant to ensure it's correctly mixed. For ECT sensor replacement.
