To remove the brake drum, loosen the brake line fitting on the inboard side of the backing plate without removing the flare nut. Then, remove the two bolts that fasten the brake cylinder to the backing plate, making sure to have a plug ready to seal the brake line. Next, remove the brake line fitting from the wheel cylinder and the push rods and dust seals. Press in one piston to force the other one out and remove the cup spring, cup, and piston. Wash the wheel cylinder, pistons, and spring with clean brake fluid or denatured alcohol, ensuring not to use petroleum-based solvents. Inspect the cylinder bore and pistons for score marks and pits, and clean the cylinder walls with crocus cloth if necessary. To assemble the wheel cylinder, lubricate the bore with clean brake fluid or brake assembly lube and attach the cup expanders to the ends of the spring. Insert the spring assembly into the cylinder, followed by the cup and pistons. Insert the push rods into the dust seals and attach the dust boot assembly to the cylinder, securely seating the dust seal in the wheel cylinder groove. Remove the brake line plug and reattach the brake line to the wheel cylinder, then install the two wheel cylinder mounting bolts. Finally, tighten the flare nut and mounting bolts to the specified torque.
