- A:The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system reduces hydrocarbon emissions by scavenging crankcase vapors. It circulates fresh air from the air filter housing through the crankcase, where it mixes with blow-by gases, before being drawn through a PCV valve into the intake manifold. The PCV system consists of the PCV valve and two hoses. The fresh air inlet hose connects the air filter housing to the valve cover, while the crankcase ventilation hose connects the rear valve cover to the intake manifold. The PCV valve is located at the valve cover end of the crankcase ventilation hose that connects to the intake manifold. To maintain idle quality, the PCV valve restricts the flow when the intake manifold vacuum is high. If abnormal operating conditions arise, the system allows excessive amounts of blow-by gases to flow back through the crankcase vent tube into the air cleaner to be consumed by normal combustion.
