1995 Jeep Wrangler Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disconnect and reinstall the exhaust manifolds in 3.8L V6 engine on 1995 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, followed by the spark plug wires. Next, disconnect the IAT electrical connector and remove the air filter housing along with the air intake duct. Proceed to disconnect and remove the upstream and downstream oxygen sensor connectors. Remove the bolts to disconnect the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold, and then disconnect the Automatic Idle Speed motor, the Throttle Position Sensor, and the vapor purge vacuum hose. If working on the left side exhaust manifold, remove the fasteners securing the heat shield. Remove the bolts attaching the left side exhaust manifold to the cylinder head and take out the exhaust manifold, then do the same for the right side exhaust manifold and the front exhaust manifold. For installation, clean the mating surfaces to eliminate old gasket material and inspect the exhaust manifolds for distortion and cracks, checking for warpage with a precision straight edge. If a feeler gauge thicker than 0.030-inch fits between the straightedge and the mating surface, take the exhaust manifold(s) to an automotive machine shop for resurfacing. Position the exhaust manifold with a new gasket and install the mounting bolts finger-tight, ensuring the gasket is identified by the correct cylinder designation and exhaust port position. Tighten the bolts starting from the middle and working outward to the specified torque. Finally, reinstall the remaining components in reverse order, start the engine, and check for exhaust leaks between the exhaust manifolds and the cylinder heads as well as between the exhaust manifolds crossover pipe and catalytic converter.
