1997 Jeep Wrangler Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Crankshaft Seal in a 4.0L and 4.2L V6 engine on 1997 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Remove the vibration damper. Gently remove the timing chain cover oil seal using a seal remover tool or a screwdriver, but with a lot of care so that the cover bore or the crank shaft is not marred in any way which may lead to leakage when a new seal is fitted. Scrub the bore in the cover and lubricate the outer periphery of the new seal with engine oil or multi purpose grease. Cocking a new seal into place , using a socket, the outside diameter slightly less than the diameter of the seal, gently hammer into position: if no socket is available, a piece of pipe of large diameter and short length may be used. After the installation, the user should make sure that the seal is still in tact as the spring can pop up. Replace the vibration damper and all the parts that had to be unfastened to install it. Last but not the least, start the engine and look for the traces of leakage.
