1999 Jeep Wrangler Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the front crankshaft seal in 3.6L V6 engine on 1999 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Remove the crankshaft balancer. Use a screwdriver or hook tool to carefully pry out the seal, taking care not to damage the oil pump cover bore or the crankshaft's nose and sealing surface. An alternative method for removing the seal involves drilling small holes on each side and inserting self-tapping screws, which can then be used with pliers to pull the seal out without prying. If replacing the seal while the timing chain cover is off, support the cover on two blocks of wood and drive the seal out from the backside using a hammer and punch. Apply clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the outer edge of the new seal and install it in the cover with the lip facing inward, driving it into place with a seal driver or a large socket and hammer, ensuring it enters squarely and is at the proper depth. Check the balancer hub surface for grooves; if present, the balancer must be replaced. Lubricate the balancer hub with clean engine oil and reinstall the crankshaft balancer. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal.
