2000 Chrysler Cirrus Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What procedure can be used to remove one or both of the exhaust manifolds in V6 engine on 2000 Chrysler Cirrus?
A: By this procedure, it is possible to replace or remove either or both exhaust manifolds depending on the need. To start, turn off the power by removing the negative battery cable from the ground stud at the left shock tower. Lift the car and put it properly on jackstand to provide a good ground for working on it. Take out the exhaust manifold heat shield(s); this will require the disconnect of the wiring harness of the oxygen sensor at the connector, before the removal of the rear manifold heat shield. To get to the front manifold heat shield the alternator upper bracket has to be first taken out. For easy removal of the exhaust manifold and manifold to pipe fasteners, use penetrating oil on the mating area and shown below in the picture. Under the vehicle remove the exhaust manifold cross over pipe remove the oxygen sensor wiring harness at the connector. If you are removing the rear exhaust manifold, near the firewall, you may have to take off the power steering pump bracket and can disconnect the manifold from the exhaust system, although you will likely have to partly remove the exhaust system. Loosen the mounting nuts and take off the exhaust manifold along with the gasket, exhaust manifold studs need to be cleaned with a wire brush, if any of them are damaged at the threaded part they have to be replaced. Scrape off all the gasket material on the mating surfaces of the exhaust manifold, cylinder head and exhaust pipe, checking for wear or crack on these surface with out causing and harm or dent on the surfaces. Exhaust manifold gasket surfaces shall also undergo flatness check using a precision straightedge and feeler gauge and in the event that any of the surfaces exceeds limit, the exhaust manifold or cylinder head shall be replaced or resurfaced. For installation, position new exhaust gasket(s) on cylinder head, apply Loctite No. 271 to threads of exhaust manifold mounting stud, put on manifold, washers and nut before finally tightening to three progressive stages to that of torque specification. Perform the reverse of the removal steps, and on completing the installation, make sure to fit a new gasket(s) between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe(s) and tighten the nut(s) to the prescribed torque. Last check involves ignition of the engine and ensuring that the heard produced does not have any leakages.
