2009 Jeep Wrangler Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to correctly install a Crankshaft Seal in a 2.5L four-cylinder engine on 2009 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Pull off the negative battery cable from the battery, and unscrew the vibration damper. However, one must pay attention to the location of the seal as the new seal will have to be placed in the same orientation. In a gentle manner remove the oil seal from the cover by use of a seal puller or a big screw driver without bending the cover or scratching the crankshaft. Before fitting it, coat the outer circumference of the new seal with clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease and the lip of the seal should be facing the inside of the cover. Anvil the seal into position with seal driver or large socket and hammer until it goes in to the bore squarely and arrests in position as the front face of the seal calamines with the cover. The covers for timing chains also need to be unbolted, after which one should use a large screwdriver to pry the old seal out of the cover while avoiding both distorting the seal, and scratching at the wall of the seal bore. If the engine has many hours, put some penetrating oil on the seal-to-cover joint and let it marinade before unscrewing the seal. The bore should now be cleaned of any old seal material and corrosion, by filling a recess in the cover, a block of wood should be placed under the cover and new seal placed in the bore with the lip inwards. When installing the new seal, the application of a little amount of oil at the outer periphery of the seal is essential. Cling the seal into the bore with a large socket and hammer until it is flush with the face of the socket; the outside diameter of the socket should correspond to that of the seal. If a socket cannot be used, such as a pipe or a piece of wood may be used as a substitute, but caution should be taken not to harm the seal. Last but not the least is to replace the timing chain cover back into its original position.
