Jeep Patriot Flywheel

The Jeep Patriot Flywheel is a device that creates stability during an engine's operation by linking the starter and clutch actions and storing the engine's rotational energy. The Flywheel is bolted to the crankshaft, which helps to smooth out the pulsing torque from combustion. Its ring gear is matched to the starter motor so that the starter can spin the engine to start it. The Flywheel's friction face meshes with the clutch disc and pressure plate so that each gear in a Jeep Patriot shifts smoothly and predictably. Jeep Patriots have seen two Flywheel designs throughout the model years: a one-piece solid design and a dual mass version. The dual mass design splits the disc into a primary and secondary section, which are separated with spring dampers. Consequently, the spring dampers soak up extra vibration for a quieter ride. A dual-mass unit cannot be resurfaced and may suffer an internal failure, whereas a solid unit will generally be machined lightly. Consequently, a Jeep owner's replacement choice depends on wear patterns like hot spots, cracks, or damaged ring gear teeth. Regardless of type, pay attention to the clutch feel and startup noise to help identify Flywheel wear and tear before it affects your Patriot's drivability.

Then unbolt the driveplate from the crankshaft; there is a tool which is available in counter of any auto parts store by the name of 'Dog' which holds the driveplate tightly while loosening the bolts of the driveplate or you can use the screw driver and can wedge it in the ring gear teeth of the driveplate. It is done after the removal of the driveplate and involves cleaning and scrutinizing the mating surfaces of the driveplate and crankshaft, with replacement of the crankshaft rear main seal if it is worn or leaking as you get ready to reinstall the driveplate. For installation, centre the driveplate over the crankshaft, be utilising the previously made match marks and then apply thread lock on the threads of the bolt before tightening it. Put the holding tool or insert the blade of the screwdriver in between of the ring gear teeth so that to immobilise the driveplate then tighten the bolts to the recommended torque only. The balance of the installation is done in the reverse order to the removal.
