Jeep Wagoneer Axle Shaft

The Axle Shaft in Jeep Wagoneer vehicles serve the purpose to transmit power from the differential to the drive wheels so that they can rotate power independently if the vehicle has to turn on the road. Jeep Wagoneer models adopt solid axles where the differential as well as axle shafts are incorporated in the live axle suspension system to provide adequate strength and support for the vehicle's weight. Adjustments to the axle shaft design have been made in Jeep Wagoneer cars in the past, both axles and its halfshafts. This is especially common among older generation vehicles while halfshaft is used on the vehicles with independent suspension. The main distinction lies in their construction and function: solid axles are a much more robust design for applications where the vehicle specifications are more on the heavier side while halfshafts are a better setup to deal with varying speeds of the wheels. In general, the Axle Shaft plays an important role for the Jeep Wagoneer in terms of movement and maneuverability.

Jeep Wagoneer Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the axle shaft in a front axle assembly on Jeep Wagoneer?
    A:
This procedure is applicable to both 4WD and 2WD vehicles. If you are working on a 2WD vehicle, Ignore references to the driveshaft, differential and shift motor. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands positioned under the frame rails. Remove the front wheels. Unbolt the front brake calipers and hang them out of the way with pieces of wire - don't let the calipers hang by the brake hose. Remove the brake pads, anchor plates and brake discs. Disconnect the vacuum harness from the front axle shift motor. Mark the relationship of the front driveshaft to the front differential pinion shaft yoke, then disconnect the driveshaft from the yoke. Discard the U-joint straps. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the bracket on the axle. Disconnect the tie-rod and center link from the steering knuckle arms. Position them out of the way and hang them with pieces of wire from the under body. Unbolt the lower ends of the shock absorbers from the axle. Remove the steering dampener. Remove the ABS sensor (if equipped). Position a hydraulic jack under the differential. If two jacks are available, place one under the right side axle tube to balance the assembly (4WD models). On 2WD models, position the jack in the center of the axle. Unbolt the upper and lower suspension arms from the axle. Slowly lower the assembly to the ground. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. When raising the axle into position, make sure the coil springs seat properly. Be sure to use new U-joint straps. For fasteners with specified torque values, be sure they are tightened to the specified torque.
