Start by removing the battery hold-down clamp. Unscrew the hold-down bolt and remove the clamp. Carefully lift out the heavy battery.

If corrosion is present on the battery, you should remove the battery for cleaning by loosening the cable clamp bolts and disconnecting the hold-down clamp.

Look at the indicator eye on the top of the battery (if equipped). A green indicator eye means the battery is 75 to 100 percent charged, black indicates 0 to 75 percent charged, and clear or bright indicates low electrolyte level. Maintenance-free batteries with clear indicator eyes should be replaced, while low-maintenance batteries with removable cell caps can have distilled water added to the correct level. Perform an open-voltage circuit test using a voltmeter to check the battery voltage, ensuring the surface charge is removed for accurate measurement. A fully charged battery should have at least 12.4 volts. Charge the battery if the voltage is lower. Perform a battery load test with a battery load tester to assess the battery's ability to handle heavy amperage draw. A fully functional battery should not drop below 9.6 volts during the test.
