Q:
How to replace the key lock cylinder and ignition switch in a Chrysler 300? Posted by Customer
A:
If the key is difficult to turn, the problem may not be in the ignition switch or Ignition Lock Cylinder. It could be due to an out-of-adjustment transmission shift cable or Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) cable. To replace the Ignition Lock Cylinder, disconnect the negative battery terminal, pry off the ignition switch bezel and instrument cluster bezel, insert the ignition key and turn it to the ON position, depress the retaining pin and remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder from the steering column. Before installing the new Ignition Lock Cylinder, ensure the ignition key is still in the ON position and align the D-shaped lug with the socket in the Ignition Lock Cylinder housing. Push the Ignition Lock Cylinder into the ignition switch until it clicks into place. To replace the ignition switch, disconnect the negative battery terminal, disable the airbag system, remove the knee bolster and reinforcement panel, remove the lower mounting nut and front mounting bolts, disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition switch and Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM), disconnect the BTSI cable, remove the ignition switch mounting screw, depress the release tabs and remove the ignition switch. The installation process is the reverse of removal. The SKREEM, also known as the Wireless Control Module (WCM), is responsible for recognizing the encrypted RF signal produced by the transponder inside the ignition key. It unlocks the door locks, activates electronic modules, and allows the engine to start. If the key or SKREEM/WCM is replaced, reprogramming is necessary at a dealership.
