To remove the valve covers from the cylinder heads, first loosen the rocker arm shaft bolts, beginning with the center bolts and moving outward. Once fully loosened, lift the rocker shaft assembly off the cylinder head, marking each rocker arm assembly to ensure the upper rocker arms (intake) and lower rocker arms (exhaust) are noted. Keep track of the rocker arm positions for reinstallation, storing each set of components in a way that maintains their original locations, and remove the pushrods, storing them in order to avoid mixing them up. Note that exhaust pushrods are slightly longer than intake pushrods and are not interchangeable. If the cylinder heads have been milled for flatness, install the correct length pushrods to compensate for the reduced distances of the rocker arms to camshaft dimensions, consulting with a machine shop if necessary. Inspect each rocker arm for wear, cracks, and damage, particularly at the contact points with pushrods and valve stems, and check the rocker arm shafts and bores for wear, replacing any worn or damaged components. Ensure the hole at the pushrod end of each rocker arm is clear, and inspect the pushrods for cracks and excessive wear, rolling them across a flat surface to check for bends. Lubricate the lower end of each pushrod with clean engine oil or assembly lube before reinstalling them in their original locations, ensuring they seat completely in the lifter socket. Apply assembly lube to the valve stems and upper ends of the pushrods to protect mating surfaces during initial start-up, then lubricate the rocker shafts and assemble them with all components in their original positions before installing onto the cylinder heads. Tighten the rocker arm shafts starting with the center bolt and following a specific sequence until the specified torque is reached, ensuring the pushrods seat properly in the rocker arms. If the bolts become tight before the shaft is seated or the pushrods bind, do not continue tightening; instead, remove the rocker arm shafts and inspect all components carefully. Finally, install the valve covers, start the engine, and listen for unusual valve train noises while checking for oil leaks at the valve cover gaskets.
