How to replace the Transfer Case Seal, including the front output shaft seal and extension housing seal on Dodge Dakota? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the skid plate if equipped and drain the transfer case lubricant. For the front output shaft seal, remove the front driveshaft. If the model has a companion flange, remove the companion flange nut and flange from the transfer case, tapping the companion flange off the output shaft with a brass or plastic hammer. For models without the companion flange, remove the front driveshaft seal boot clamp and slide the boot from the transfer case slinger. Carefully bend the slinger away from the transfer case and remove it from the shaft, possibly using a punch and hammer to loosen it. Pry out the old seal with a screwdriver or seal removal tool, ensuring not to scratch or gouge the seal bore. Lubricate the lips and outer diameter of the new seal with multi-purpose grease, place it in position square to the bore with the garter spring facing inward, and use a seal driver or a suitable equivalent to drive the seal into place, starting with light hammer taps until it is recessed correctly. Install the seal slinger and driveshaft seal boot, securing the boot with a new clamp. If equipped, install the companion flange onto the transfer case output shaft, tighten the flange nut to the specified torque, and then install the front driveshaft. Finally, remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle. The procedure for the extension housing seal replacement is identical to that of the transmission.

    Q:
How to replace a Transfer Case Seal on Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure also applies to the transfer case extension housing seal on 4WD models. Oil leaks at the extension housing oil seal are usually caused by a worn seal lip, and replacing this seal is relatively easy since it can be done without removing the transmission from the vehicle. The extension housing oil seal is located at the rear tip of the transmission extension housing, where the driveshaft is attached. For 4WD models, there is no extension housing, as the transfer case is bolted to the rear of the transmission housing, but the procedure for replacing the rear seal is similar. If a leak is suspected due to puddles beneath the extension housing seal or consistent lubricant loss, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. A leaking seal will cause gear lube to ooze or drip from the rear of the transmission, coating the forward end of the driveshaft and leaking onto the ground. Remove the driveshaft or transfer case for 4WD models. Some seals have a metal casing with a lip, which can be pried out using a chisel and hammer; care should be taken not to damage the splines on the transmission output shaft. If the seal lacks a metal lip, a special oil seal removal tool can be obtained from most auto parts stores. To install the new oil seal, use a seal driver or a very large socket as a drift, ensuring that it is driven into the bore squarely and completely seated. Finally, lubricate the splines of the transmission output shaft and the outside of the driveshaft yoke with lightweight grease before reinstalling the driveshaft, taking care not to damage the lip of the new seal.

    Q:
How to replace the Transfer Case Seal for the front output shaft on Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the skid plate, if equipped. Drain the transfer case lubricant. For the front output shaft seal, note that on some models, this seal is located inside the transfer case and cannot be replaced at home. Remove the front driveshaft. On models equipped with a companion flange, remove the companion flange nut and flange from the transfer case, then tap the companion flange off the output shaft with a brass or plastic hammer. For models without the companion flange, remove the front driveshaft seal boot clamp and slide the boot from the transfer case slinger. Carefully bend the slinger away from the transfer case and remove it from the shaft, using a punch and hammer if necessary to jar it loose. Pry out the old seal with a screwdriver or seal removal tool, taking care not to scratch or gouge the seal bore. Lubricate the lips and outer diameter of the new seal with multi-purpose grease, then place the seal in position, ensuring the garter spring faces toward the inside of the transfer case. Use a seal driver or a suitable equivalent to drive the seal into place, starting with light hammer taps and continuing until it is recessed the correct amount. Install the seal slinger and driveshaft seal boot, securing the boot with a new clamp. If equipped, install the companion flange onto the transfer case output shaft, then install and tighten the flange nut to the specified torque. Finally, install the front driveshaft, remove the jackstands, and lower the vehicle. The procedure for replacing the extension housing seal is identical to that for the transmission.
