All models employ a one piece rear Crankshaft Seal mounted in a bolt-in housing and the only way to change this seal is to remove the transaxle and drive plate. The rear Crankshaft Seal and housing are considered as the seal and its housing, and they are serviced together; this calls for several tools. The crankshaft has to be placed, and the main bearing caps have to be screwed on before the new Crankshaft Seal and housing can be fitted onto the block. The first step is to take out the old Crankshaft Seal from the housing using hammer and punch, inserted from the rear end but be careful not to mar the seal bore; measure the extent the old Crankshaft Seal is recessed which should match the depth it gets recessed for the new Crankshaft Seal. When this is done ensure that the entire housing is clean and use a thin coat of engine oil on the outer edge of the new Crankshaft Seal that should be fitted squarely into the housing bore. If a press is not available, place one piece of housing over the Crankshaft Seal and the other piece immediately adjacent to the Crankshaft Seal and then place two flat pieces of wood over the top of the assembly and use a large vise to force the wood into the Crankshaft Seal or, another technique that can be used is placing the housing on a bench and then using a block of wood and a hammer to drive the Crankshaft Seal in to the housing, taking care to flatten out Next use anaerobic sealant at the upper part of the retainer and the housing before fitting the housing over the crankshaft and bolting it on the block, but the seal lips should be lubricated using clean engine oil or multi purpose grease. Last of all, turn the housing bolts in a clockwise manner until all of the housing bolts are properly secured.

Remove the oil pan, then take out the rear Crankshaft Seal bearing cap and pry the old seal half out of the bearing cap using a small screwdriver. Carefully drive the old upper Crankshaft Seal out with a small brass punch and a hammer until it protrudes enough from the engine block to be gripped with needle-nose pliers for removal, ensuring not to damage the crankshaft. Clean the Crankshaft Seal bearing cap and the rear of the block/crankshaft thoroughly, eliminating all traces of oil and old sealant. Coat the lip of the new upper seal with engine oil and the outside surface with liquid soap before inserting the seal into the groove in the engine block with the lip facing forward. Apply RTV sealant to both sides of the lower seal ends and liquid soap on the outside of the seal, avoiding the seal lip, then press the seal into place in the cap and apply a film of engine oil to the seal lip to maintain the bearing-to-journal clearance. Add RTV sealant to the chamfered edges of the rear Crankshaft Seal bearing cap and install it, tightening the bolts to the specified torque. Reinstall the remaining components in reverse order of removal, add the specified amount of oil, run the engine, and check for oil leaks.

Remove the timing belt and timing belt covers. Pull the crankshaft sprocket from the crankshaft using a bolt-type gear puller, and then remove the Woodruff key. Use a screwdriver or seal removal tool to carefully pry the seal out of its bore, taking care to avoid damaging the oil pump assembly, crankshaft, and seal bore. Clean and inspect the seal bore and sealing surface on the crankshaft, removing minor imperfections with emery cloth; note that a worn groove in the crankshaft sealing surface may prevent a new seal from stopping leaks. Lubricate the new seal with engine oil and drive it into place using a hammer and an appropriately sized socket. Position the crankshaft sprocket with the mark facing out and install it onto the crankshaft in its original position. Complete the process by reinstalling the timing belt and then run the engine to check for oil leaks.
