To remove the steering wheel, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels straight ahead and disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then, remove the steering column covers. For 2001 through 2005 models, turn the steering wheel 1/2-turn clockwise and use snap-ring pliers to spread apart the spring clips on the back side of the steering wheel. Pull out on the airbag module to disengage the retaining pins. For 2006 and later models, disconnect the electrical connector from the airbag module and unplug the horn and cruise control connectors. Remove the steering wheel retaining bolt and mark its position. Reinstall the bolt partially and use a steering wheel puller to free the wheel from the shaft. If necessary, remove the clock spring by unclipping the latches, disconnecting the electrical connector, and turning the rotor 1/2-turn counterclockwise. Insert a paper clip through the hole at the 10 o'clock position to lock the clockspring in the centered position. To install the clockspring, remove the paper clip and turn the rotor 1/2-turn clockwise. Install the clockspring on the steering column, ensuring the latch hooks engage properly and the electrical connector is fully plugged in. If the clockspring is not centered, turn the hub until it stops, then rotate it back half the number of turns and insert a paper clip through the hole at 10 o'clock. Remove the pin and turn the rotor 1/2-turn clockwise. Install the steering column covers. Finally, align the marks and install the steering wheel, tightening the bolt to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connectors and position the airbag module on the steering wheel, pushing it in until the retaining pins engage with the spring clips.
