Jeep 53008342 Clutch Release Bearing

Take off the clutch and release the fork and bearing. If the bearing is noisy or doesn't rotate smoothly, replace it. Inspect the bearing and fork for damage. Apply high-temperature grease to the fork pivot ball, release bearing, and transmission input shaft. Reattach the bearing and fork. Installation is the reverse of removal.

First of all, detach the clutch slave cylinder from the clutch housing. You can remove the transmission and disengage the release lever. Slide off the release bearing assembly from the transmission input shaft bearing retainer. Inspect the bearing for smooth rotation and noise, replacing if necessary. Check for fluid leakage in hydraulic release bearings, replacing the assembly.

For installation, reverse the removal steps, ensuring to use a new pressed metal retaining nut. The hydraulic release bearing will be retained in a compressed position by nylon straps that break upon the first clutch pedal depression, so no removal is necessary. For models from 1994 and later, remove the transmission, disconnect the release bearing from the release lever, and slide it off the transmission input shaft. Inspect the release bearing similarly, ensuring it turns smoothly and is free from damage, and check the release fork and pivot for security and integrity. During installation, reverse the removal steps, filling the inner groove of the release bearing with high-temperature grease and applying a light coat to the input shaft splines and the contact face with the pressure plate diaphragm fingers. Lightly lubricate the clutch release bearing where it meets the release lever, then install the transmission and bleed the system.
