Pull the parking brake with considerable force and attempt to engage and then turn the starter switch with the brake on in every shift lever position; it should only turn on when the shift lever is in PARK or NEUTRAL position. If it operates in any other position, then adjust the shift cable. If accustoming of the starter results in its improper functioning, then it is possible that the Transmission Range (TR) sensor is faulty. Also when adjusting the shift cable that is connected to the shifter, make sure that it is not to be confused with the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) The latter is used for a different purpose. The shift cable adjustment guarantees that the shift occurs in the right manner and the engine starts only in PARK or NEUTRAL while the BTSI system which prevents reverse movement from PARK or NEUTRAL without pressing on the brake pedal. First, engage the shift lever to PARK, then, the removal of center console, turning of shift cable adjuster nut and finally jacking of the vehicle to a reasonable height with the help of jackstands. Check also that the rear of the vehicle is also lifted to spin the driveshaft for validation. At the transmission end of the cable, fight the cable end off the shift lever and ensure that the transmission shift lever is in the PARK position. Ensure that the park lock pawl is engaged by this you rotate the driveshaft and if the lock pawl is engaged the driveshaft shall not rotate. Engage the shift cable to the manual shift lever, lower the car, apply the parking brake and ascertain that the engine can be started without manipulating the shift lever. If there is still a problem with the starter, in other positions, then tighten the shift cable adjuster nut and replace the Transmission Range (TR) sensor. To replace make sure the shift lever is in PARK, then lift the vehicle until secure, pull the cable end off the shift lever, lower the vehicle and then remove the center console, disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever pin and pull the retainer off the shifter assembly. Shift cable grommet and shift cable can be removed from the engine compartment and reassemble back in reverse manner for the proper cable tension.
