Jeep 53030837 Vapor Canister

The evaporative emissions control system prevents fuel vapors from escaping the fuel system and being released into the atmosphere. Vapors from the fuel tank are stored in a charcoal canister and drawn into the intake manifold when the engine reaches normal operating temperature. The canister is mounted to a bracket behind the right front bumper fascia on 1995 through 1997 models and on top of the fuel tank on 1998 models. The canisters are maintenance-free and should last the life of the vehicle. A strong fuel odor in the engine compartment or raw fuel leaking from the canister are common symptoms of a fault in the system, especially in hot temperatures. The Leak Detection Pump (LDP) pressurizes all systems except for those installed on 1995 models. If normal system pressure cannot be achieved by the LDP, indicating a leak, the PCM will store the appropriate fault code and illuminate the CHECK ENGINE light on the instrument panel. The most common cause of system pressure loss is a loose or poor sealing gas cap.
