    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
What is the function of the front and rear Axle Shaft, Differential, and Drive Shaft on Dodge Nitro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The driveshaft transmits power from the transmission or transfer case to the rear axle. On 4WD models, there is also a front driveshaft that transmits power from the transfer case to the front axle. Universal joints or constant velocity joints allow the driveshaft to operate while changing its angle and length. The U-joints installed by the factory do not require lubrication. If the front driveshaft CV-joints are worn or damaged, the entire driveshaft must be replaced. The driveshafts must be reassembled and installed in their original positions to avoid excessive vibration. The differential is located inside the axle housing and has a hypoid-gear design. A limited-slip unit is available as an option. The differential transfers torque from one wheel to the other if one loses traction. Differentials are often designated by the diameter of the ring gear. Axle bearings and CV-joints cannot be rebuilt and must be serviced as an assembly. The front drive axles on 4WD models have constant velocity joints. Some axles are equipped with an optional anti-lock brake system. The rear axleshafts are housed inside the rear axle assembly and are retained by nuts or C-locks. The part number and gear ratio can be found on a tag attached to the differential housing cover or the axleshaft tube.
