Park the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead and mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft coupler to the Rack And Pinion input shaft before removing the pinch bolt to separate the coupler from the input shaft. Position a drain pan under the Rack And Pinion and, using a flare-nut wrench, disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines, capping them to prevent leakage. For models with a 3.7L engine, remove the pressure line and return hose at the Rack And Pinion. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands while applying the parking brake and removing the wheels. Loosen the tie-rod end jam nuts and, if equipped, remove the oil drip tray. Separate the tie-rod from the knuckle and, if equipped, remove the front skid plate or the front splash shield. For models equipped with 4WD, remove the front axle, and on models with a VB engine, remove the pressure line and return hose at the Rack And Pinion. Remove the mounting bolts and maneuver the Rack And Pinion out of the vehicle, inspecting all rubber bushings for wear and damage, replacing any that are cracked, torn, or deteriorated. For 2011 and later Grand Cherokee VB and V6 AWD models and all Durango models, repeat the process of loosening the front wheel lug nuts, raising the front of the vehicle, and supporting it securely on jackstands while applying the parking brake and removing the front wheels. Disconnect the outer tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles, support the engine from above using an engine support fixture or hoist, and remove the front crossmember. Remove the Rack And Pinion mounting bolts, rotate and move the Rack And Pinion to the right until the left side can be lifted over the crossmember, then slide the right side out and remove the Rack And Pinion. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten the Rack And Pinion mounting bolts and the intermediate shaft coupler pinch bolt to the specified torque values, tighten the wheel lug nuts to the specified torque, check the power steering fluid level and add if necessary, then bleed the system and re-check the power steering fluid level.
