Place the shift lever into Park (P) position and remove the center console. Locate the shift cable on the shift lever assembly and disconnect it from the shift lever and assembly bracket. Next, locate the shift interlock cable on the shift lever assembly and disconnect it from the shift lever and bracket. Disconnect the electrical connectors of the shift lever assembly, then remove the nuts, bolts, or screws attaching the assembly to the floor pan and take the shift lever assembly out of the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to adjust the shift cable and shift interlock cable. For 2003 and later models, locate and loosen the adjustment nut on the shift cable lever enough to allow free movement for adjustment. Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. For 2002 and earlier models, release the cable locking clamp and the cable bracket at the transmission to allow the cable housing to move freely for adjustment. Disconnect the shift cable end from the pivot on the shift lever at the transmission. Move the transmission shift lever to the park position by rotating it rearwards as far as it will go, ensuring the transmission is in park by attempting to rotate the rear driveshaft, which will engage the parking pawl and prevent rotation. Reconnect the cable end to the pivot on the shift lever at the transmission. For 2002 and earlier models, attach the cable bracket and secure the cable locking clamp at the transmission. Lower the vehicle and verify that the shift lever is in the Park (P) position. For 2003 and later models, tighten the cable lever adjustment nut securely. Finally, verify proper operation before installing the remaining interior components.
