To perform a preliminary check, locate the fuel pump inside the fuel tank, which muffles its sound during engine operation. Turn the ignition key to ON (not START) and listen for a soft whirring sound indicating the pump is functioning; if not audible, remove the fuel filler cap and have someone turn the ignition to ON while you listen. If the pump does not activate, inspect the fuel pump fuse and relay in the Power Distribution Center. If those components are intact, check the wiring to the fuel pump. If everything checks out but the pump is still non-functional, it may be defective. If the pump runs continuously with the ignition in the ON position, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) may be faulty and should be evaluated by a qualified technician. For a pressure check, acquire a fuel pressure gauge with the necessary fittings to connect to the Schrader valve on the injector fuel rail. Relieve the fuel system pressure before locating the test port on the fuel rail, which may require removing the air intake duct and possibly the air resonator box. After connecting the gauge, start the engine and monitor the pressure reading. If the pressure is below specifications, inspect for restrictions in the fuel system, including the inlet strainer and fuel filter; if no restrictions are found, replace the fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit. If the pressure is above specifications, the fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit should also be replaced, as the pressure regulator cannot be replaced independently.
