    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
How to replace a power steering pump and pulley on Dodge Nitro? Posted by Customer
    A:
The plastic pulley used on the pump of the 2.4L engine is not reusable. Once it is removed it cannot be reinstalled on a new pump. If you're replacing the pump with a new one, you may have to swap the pump pulley to the new unit. A special puller/installer is required for this. They are available at most automotive parts stores and they can be rented at some equipment rental yards. Using a poultry baster or a suction gun, remove as much fluid as possible from the pump reservoir. For 3.7L models, remove the radiator crossmember. For 4.0L models, remove the air filter housing, coolant reservoir, and windshield washer reservoir. Remove the cooling fan and fan shroud for all models. Disconnect both hoses from the power steering pump and unbolt the pump from its bracket. Access the bolts through the holes in the pulley. If necessary, use a special puller to remove the pulley from the pump. Note the position of the old plastic pulley on the shaft before removing it. Use a special pulley installation tool or an alternate tool to press the pulley back onto the pump. Installation of the pump is the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure to tighten the fasteners securely and bleed the power steering system.
