    Q:
What Role Does the Neutral Safety Switch Play in Performance on Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Automatic transmission equipped models have a Neutral Safety Switch which prevents the engine from starting unless the shift lever is in Neutral or Park. Try to start the vehicle in each gear. The engine should crank only in Park or Neutral. Make sure the steering column lock allows the key to go into the Lock position only when the shift lever is in Park. The ignition key should come out only in the Lock position. Further information on the Neutral Safety Switch is available in Part B.

    Q:
How to test and replace a Neutral Safety Switch on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
The neutral safety switch and back-up light switches are combined into one unit, featuring three terminals with the neutral switch positioned in the center. A ground for the starter solenoid circuit is provided through the shift lever only in the Neutral and Park positions. Begin by raising the vehicle and securing it on jackstands, then detach the electrical connector from the neutral safety switch, which screws into the housing and contacts the internal shaft lever, and test the switch for continuity; continuity should exist between the center terminal and transmission case only when the shift lever is in Neutral and Park. If the switch appears faulty, check the shift linkage before replacing it. Before replacing the switch, place a container underneath to catch any transmission fluid, then remove the switch and allow the fluid to drain. With the shift lever in Park or Neutral, check the lever finger position and alignment with the switch opening. Install the switch and seal, tightening it to the specified torque, then test for continuity and reconnect the electrical connector. Finally, lower the vehicle and check the transmission fluid level, adding the specified fluid as necessary.

    Q:
How do you position and secure the Neutral Safety Switch during replacement for the 1999 Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Place the switch in position and install the nut and bolt finger tight. Then, ensure the transmission is in Neutral and rotate the switch until the neutral standard line on the housing aligns with the vertical groove in the manual valve shaft. Tighten the adjusting bolt to specified torque and bend the washer tabs over the attaching nut.
