These models have a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) or airbag system which is accompanied by two airbags for the driver side and front passenger side to ensure that occupant fatalities arising from head-on collisions are greatly reduced. The ACM is located below the dashboard by the transmission tunnel between the front seats with optional side curtain identifiable by the airbag logo on the headliner above the rear windows. Airbag module is simply a housing module that hold both the airbag and the inflator unit where the inflator assembly cause the release of gas to inflate the bag through an electrical signal. The driver's-side airbag contains a clockspring which is a flat ribbon-like device that transmits the signal 'on the fly' as the steering wheel rotates. The passenger airbag is housed in the dashboard above the glove compartment, the side curtain airbag optional for the car's length above the side window. Front crash sensors are located on the radiator support and when there is heavy impact, signals to the Airbag control Module alert it to fire the airbags. The control module is equipped with a microprocessor that controls system activities and, when the vehicle is started, lights the AIRBAG light; if the module identifies a malfunction, the light remains on signaling the need for repair. The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) must be disabled whenever components proximity to the SRS system are being serviced This include turning the ignition off, removing the negative battery cable and waiting for 2 minutes. To enable the system, the ignition should be switched off and the negative cable disconnected then reconnect the negative cable and switch on the ignition with no part of the body in front of the air bags, if the warning light is bright and goes off, then the system is operational.
