- A:To remove the alternator, start by detaching the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, disconnect the electrical connectors from the alternator. Loosen the alternator adjustment and pivot bolts and remove the drivebelt. Next, remove the adjustment and pivot bolts to separate the alternator from the engine. If you're replacing the alternator, bring the old one with you when purchasing a replacement to ensure it looks identical and has the same terminals and identification numbers. Some new alternators may not have a pulley installed, so you may need to switch it from the old unit. Installation is the reverse of removal.
