Q:
What are the drive belts and why are they important for engine and accessory operation? Posted by Customer
A:
The drive belts, also known as V-belts, are located at the front of the engine and are crucial for the engine and accessory operation. Over time, these belts are prone to failure and should be inspected and adjusted regularly to prevent significant engine damage. The number of belts used depends on the accessories installed, such as the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and air conditioning compressor. The belts should be checked for cracks, separation, fraying, and glazing, while the pulleys should be inspected for nicks, cracks, distortion, and corrosion. The tension of each belt can be checked by pushing on it at a distance halfway between the pulleys. If adjustment is needed, the belt-driven accessory can be moved on the bracket. On later models, the belt tension is maintained automatically by a tensioner. To replace a belt, follow the adjustment procedures and make sure the new belt is routed correctly. It is recommended to replace all belts at the same time and to bring the old belts when purchasing new ones for comparison.
