Release the parking brake, loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the rear wheel and brake drum or caliper and disc, then loosen the equalizer nut fully. To adjust the parking brake cables, apply the parking brake, loosen the equalizer locknut, and hold the equalizer rod with locking pliers to prevent it from turning while turning the adjuster nut until the cable tension is fairly taut; tighten the locknut when satisfied with the tension. If replacing either rear cable, compress the cable housing retainer tangs to free the cable from the bracket. For drum-brake models, remove the brake shoes and disconnect the parking brake cable end from the parking brake lever by pulling back on the return spring and maneuvering the cable out of the slot. Compress the cable housing retainer tangs at the brake support plate to free the cable and housing, then push them through the backing plate or bracket. For disc-brake models, unhook the cable end from the actuator lever. Compress the cable housing retainer tang at the frame bracket and pry the housing out, then compress the tang at the bracket behind the equalizer and slide the forward end of the cable out of its slot. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to adjust the parking brake.
