The function of the evaporative emissions control system is to draw fuel vapors from the gas tank and fuel system, store them in a charcoal canister and route them to the intake manifold during normal engine operation. The most common symptom of a fault in the evaporative emissions system is a strong fuel odor in the engine compartment for 2002 and earlier models, or from the rear of the vehicle for 2003 and later models. If a fuel odor is detected, inspect the charcoal canister, located in the right rear corner of the engine compartment. On 2002 and earlier models, the evaporative emissions canister is located on the passenger's side firewall - check the housing and hoses for damage. The vapor canister is located in the engine compartment for these models. For 2003 through 2006 models, the EVAP canister is located to the rear of the right-rear wheel, under the inner fender splash shield. For 2007 and later models, it is located under the vehicle, near the driveshaft. Check the canister and all hoses for damage and deterioration.
