This system is designed to trap and store fuel vapors that would normally be emitted into the atmosphere. It consists of a charcoal-filled canister, canister purge solenoid, rollover/pressure relief valve, and connecting lines and hoses. When the engine is off, the charcoal absorbs the fuel vapor, and when the engine is started, the vapor is routed to the intake manifold or air cleaner for combustion. The canister is purged using engine vacuum through the purge solenoid, controlled by the SMEC or SBEC. The relief valve vents the fuel tank when pressure or vacuum reaches a certain level. To check the system, inspect for damage and test the canister and solenoid. The canister is located in the engine compartment, behind the headlight, and can be replaced by disconnecting hoses and removing mounting nuts. The canister purge solenoid is located on the firewall or fender well area and can be disconnected, unplugged, and removed for replacement.
