    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the timing chain and timing cover in the front of a V8 engine on a Chrysler 300? Posted by Customer
    A:
Take off the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove coolant from cooling system and engine oil also. Take away such components as engine cover, air filter housing, air intake duct, drivebelt, engine cooling fans and air conditioning compressor. Then there are alternator, drivebelt tensioner, idler pulleys, vibration damper and power steering pump to be removed. Get dipstick tube, oil pan, pickup tube, heater hoses, water pump, timing cover bolts and front cover out of the way. Remove an oil pump too. Reinsert a bolt in the end of the crankshaft, now turn it until it puts a crankshaft sprocket timing mark at 6 o'clock position and camshaft timing mark at 12 o'clock position. Withdraw a tensioner and install a drill bit to secure it in this retracted place. Remove all traces of old gasket material or sealant from your shop rag that is plugged into an opening at front side portion of oil pan's drain hole. Run screwdriver blade between lower edge of oil pan's sealing surface on an engine block as well as upper edge of old gasket material or sealant compressing tensioner spring. The appropriate tightening sequence for these bolts on each side needs to be followed here. Drain plug should not be over tightened or it will make removal difficult later when changing fluids. Fill coolant reservoir slowly with thirty percent ethylene glycol solution to avoid possible overheating which may occur due rapid change in temperature. Run in engine and inspect for leaks. Do not run without radiator cap installed if coolant has reached operating temperature first. Therefore all nomenclature mentioned above can be used interchangeably. Transmission fluid is checked using special probes or sensors installed. Transmission fluid level is checked under vehicle running conditions. Techs should check transmission fluid while vehicles are performing operations. Similarly, transmission fluid should be determined with regard to many factors including how often you run car. Transmission fluid should be checked as part of preventive maintenance routine. Transmission fluid level is determined by variations in temperature. Transmission fluid is supposed to be changed once a while. It is advised that transmission fluid can only be analyzed using dipstick which can measure the amount of fluid in it. Hence, transmission fluid should only be examined using dipstick.

    Q:
What special tools are necessary to complete the timing chain replacement procedure in 2.7L V6 engine on Dodge Challenger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Extra equipment is required to perform this process, and it is advised that one read through the whole process then gather these tools. Because timing chain entails a lot of effort to be used when being accessed and replaced, and more so because the water pump is located close to this part, then the water pump should be checked thoroughly and replaced if need be. The 2.7L engine employs three timing chains with one primary timing chain linking with the crankshaft sprocket, water pump, and two timing chains linking the two intake camshaft sprockets and two secondary timing chains link the intake and exhaust camshaft events appropriately. First remove the negative battery terminal, release fuel pressure and drain the cooling system. Take out the cooling fan assembly, coolant reservoir, radiator, accessory drive belts, crankshaft pulley, upper intake manifold, valve covers, spark plugs and place the engine so that number one piston is at the top of the compression process. Loosen the air conditioning compressor, get rid of the water outlet housing, idler pulley, and timing chain cover as well as check for slant of the bolts by drawing on paper. Turn the engine so that the timing mark on the flywheel is lined up with the mark on the crankshaft, take out the primary timing chain tensioner and the nuts and bolts from the primary camshaft sprocket. Gently remove the primary sprockets from the camshaft hubs taking the necessary note of the left and right camshaft sprockets' features. Take off the Primary timing chain guides and tensioner arm, and then the primary timing chain out. Wear check the camshaft, water pump and crankshaft sprockets, and replace them if they are worn out. If removed, fit the crankshaft sprocket aligning the oil pump housing mark and fit the upper chain guards. Proper positioning of the main timing chain involves setting the star mark on the sprocket with the light colored links on the NEW chain, before lowering it and the sprocket into place. Put in the correct camshaft sprocket and timing chain, so that links of the colored varieties connect to their marks. Position and secure the lower chain guide and tensioner arm, bleed the tensioner of oil, set it and bolt it back into position with a new lower tensioner O-ring gasket. Ensure that camshaft sprocket retaining bolts are tightened, ensure that the timing chain is pulled and the timing marks aligned before releasing the tensioner. Remove the old sealant from the timing chain cover, apply some RTV sealant on the cover and vice tighten the bolts in the right torque. The remainder of the installation procedure is the reverse of the removal procedure; refilling of the cooling system is also done. In case the crankshaft sprocket has to be removed, few tools and equipment that are necessary are a three jaw puller, propane torch or installation tool, and a machinist ruler or dial caliper. After the removal of the first timing chain, adopt the puller to get off the crankshaft sprocket. To install sprocket, it is recommended to use sprocket installing tool though one can heat the sprocket hub with the propane torch and must align it to the maximum extent that the distance between end of the crank shaft and face of the sprocket should equal 1.537 +.020 or -.020 inch.

    Q:
How to remove and install the timing chain and Timing Cover in 3.6L V6 engine on Dodge Challenger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Timing is highly complicated, and any error is fatal to the engine, it will require replacement. This procedure should only be attempted by most experienced individuals, and any doubt regarding the skills should call an expert. Check and recheck all the works to be correct before turning on the engine. Any wet cylinder liner is a potential source of cavitation damage and must not be rotated when the crankshaft or camshafts are rotated separately, which may damage the valves. Several specialist instruments are necessary for the completion of these procedures, so check they are procured before commencement. First, that involved removing the multi-pin connector from the negative terminal of the battery, lifting the front of the car up on jackstands, and then siphoning out the engine oil and coolant. Take off the drivebelt, the drivebelt tensioner, idler pulley, thermostat housing and upper radiator hose and the heater hose from the water pump. Loosen and clear heater core supply pipe, remove the power steering pump, crank balancer, and all the valve covers being careful not to let the magnetic timing wheels touch any magnet. Take out the lower and upper oil pans, timing cover mounting bolts and they should be able to pry the cover gently. To do this, just pinch the crankshaft pulley bolt, and then rotate the crankshaft until both timing marks are exactly aligned and are on the TDC number one on the exhaust stroke. If camshaft phasers are add-on parts, make sure that the marks on phasers are aligned with the plated links. Compress the chain tensioners, remove timing gear splash shield, oil pump tensioner and the oil pump sprocket, mark the oil pump for the direction of the chain installation. The camshaft phaser lock tools should be installed, the nuts on the oil control valves to be loosened, and, at last, the camshaft phasers and timing chains wanted. If located, then check the timing chain dampener for wear and also clean the timing chain and sprockets if necessary and replace them. Before turning the engine on, try to turn the crankshaft at least 2 turns round as you apply resistance at the floor end. Reset and renew the gasket material and sealant, place the chain guides and tensioners then consider the keyway on the crankshaft. Synchronize the primary chain on the crankshaft sprocket then apply clean engine oil on the sprockets and chain and by positioning the marks install the assembly. Strengthen the tightened idler sprocket fastener and put the primary chain guide and tensioner and take off the special tool from the tensioner plunger. For the left side camshaft phaser and the right side camshaft phaser, put the oil control valve and fix it properly and tight. In the position as installed, oil pump timing chain, timing chain tensioner, sprocket, and splash shield should align all special marks, rotate engine for recheck the alignment. I have fitted new coolant housing and water pump housing gaskets, applied RTV sealant to the cover, I then bolt it to the alignment dowels. Leverage up the cover bolts in a star like fashion and perform other connections in the reversed manner. Last, include oil or coolant, engage the engine, and search for any dripping.

    Q:
How to remove and install Timing Chain in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Dodge Durango? Posted by Customer
    A:
Preparation for this work requires special tools, so be sure to read this entire technique and acquire these tools before starting. For the correct valve timing, the engines incorporate three timing chains of which the main timing chain the crankshaft and pistons together with the idler gear while the two other secondary timing chains attached on the camshaft sprockets. First, get the piston number 1 cylinder at the top of the compression stroke, then remove the negative terminal of the battery, and drain the cooling system, then the drive belt also remove the engine cooling fan and shroud. Disconnect the heater hoses and the lower radiator hose from the timing chain cover, remove the power steering pump without disconnecting the fluid, and the alternator, and the air conditioning compressor if fitted. The camshaft sprocket aligning requires the accessory drive belt tensioner, valve covers, spark plugs, and all the rocker arms to be uninstalled to avoid piston striking of the valves. The camshaft position sensor is located high on the driver side valve cover and can be simply unbolted and removed, the piston number one has be at TDC on the exhaust stroke, the crankshaft damper/pulley, timing chain cover and water pump assembly will need to be removed. Put shop rags over the oil pan opening; retract the primary timing chain tensioner; and disconnect both secondary timing chain tensioners. To do this, you have to unscrew the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts, then take off the camshaft sprockets though you have to hold the camshafts as they turn. Loosen and take off the idler sprocket bolt and along with the idler sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and timing chains as a combine unit. Camshaft and crankshaft sprockets should also be checked for wear, the chains should be checked for cracks and tensioner components should be checked for signs of wear and major portions replaced. While installing the part make sure that the timing chain guides and the tensioner arms are fitted properly and the primary and secondary timing chain tensioners are fixed properly. Slide and fit the timing chains and the links correctly in place with the help of the idler sprocket, and fit the sprockets properly to the camshaft hubs. After the bolts have been removed and before reinstalling them, wash them and grease them as well, ensure that all the links of the timing chain are in order, and manually turn the engine in order to align the timing marks. Last but not the least, replace the timing chain cover and make sure that all parts are properly fixed; the engine oil and the cooling system should be replaced.

    Q:
How to remove and install Timing Chain in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Dodge Ram 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
The removal of timing system components begins with precautions given the complexity of the system and also possibility of severe engine damage as a result of an unskillful handling. These involve disconnecting the battery, draining the cooling system and removing various engine parts like the cooling fan, drivebelt, fan shroud, heater hoses, radiator hose, power steering pump, alternator, air conditioning compressor etc. The valve covers are then taken off to aid camshaft sprocket alignment and prevent piston-valve contact also. This process requires that you position No. 1 pis- ton at TDC on the exhaust stroke and remove crankshaft damper/pulley timing chain cover and water pump as a unit noting location and bolt types. Additionally these secondary chain tensioners are removed while taking care to detach camshaft sprockets without damaging camshafts. At this stage again these chains have been removed as one assembly along with idler sprocket and crankshaft sprocket that must be positioned accurately for maintaining alignment throughout this entire step. This is followed by inspection of components such as wear or stretch in chains plus proper operation of tensioners/guides. For installation purpose they are reassembled onto idler sprocket while carefully aligning camshaft chains together with primary chain right on a bench top. After that re-check every process applying it again into another engine revolution through two complete turns before finally tightening all remaining bolts with sealer/gasket integrity kept up to its capacity. It ends by changing oil filter as well as filling up cooling.

    Q:
How to replace the timing chains in 3.7L V6 and 4.7L V8 engine on Jeep Grand Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Specific tools are required to achieve this process, thus it is wise to read the whole process and get the right tools in place before performing the task. There are three timing chains for precise control of valve time; the major timing chain connects the crankshaft sprocket to the idler gear sprocket; the secondary timing chains join the idler gear to the camshaft sprockets. Timing system is rather delicate and in case of mistakes, serious damage to the engine can be caused; so this procedure is recommended only for highly qualified personnel; everything should be checked twice before the engine is engaged. Start with having the piston of cylinder number one at the top dead centre of compression stroke, at the same time, remove the negative cable of battery, drain the coolant, and then take off the drive belt, the engine cooling fan and the shroud of the fan. Remove the heater hoses and the lower radiator hose, unbolt the power steering pump, you do not have to disconnect the lines, you can also remove the alternator and air conditioning compressor if the vehicle has those amenities and the final thing is to remove the accessory drive belt tensioner. Take out the valve covers and sparking plugs, next to the rocker arms so that there could be cutting of the camshaft sprocket and no contact could be made with the pistons valves are present. Which is exhaust strokle Remove the camshaft position sensor, Set the No.1 cylinder piston at TDC on exhaust stroke and then pull the crankshaft damper/pulley, timing chain cover along with water pump assembly fasteners but before that it is essential to mark some of the bolts for the time being. Place a piece of shop rags over the oil pan opening, push the primary timing chain tensioner to the lowest position and remove the secondary timing chain tensioners. Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and then gently pull the camshaft sprockets this will enable the secondary chains to drop in between the timing chain sprockets. To dismantle, do away with idler sprocket bolt so as to come off idler sproacket, crankshaft sprocket, and timing chains simultaneously, other preliminaries include removing cylinder head access plugs and oil fill tube, lastly separating the timing chain guides and tensioner arms. Examine the condition of the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets, as well as camshaft and crankshaft chains , cracks or excessive wear may be present here, and carefully study the state of the tensioner and its components. If any of these parts appear worn out they should be replaced, the tensioner lube jet should also be cleared if required. Before turning on the engine, the crankshaft must be manually turned around two complete revolutions to prevent any problems. If the primary timing chain tensioner was removed reconnect it in locked mode; compress an engage the secondary timing chain tensioners before installing them on the engine. Check the right timing chain is fitted and fit the timing chains to the idler sprocket Then fit the main timing chain. Cover and oil the idler shaft and bushing before putting in the idler sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and the timing chains as a single unit on the engine. Ensure that sprockets on camshafts match their chains, ensure that the bolts are cleaned and that the washers have been lubricated before being fitted. Ensure all links fit the adjacent marks are correctly established, release the locking pins of the tensioners and turn the engine to double check the marks. Lastly, the camshaft sprocket bolts will be tightened, the timing chain cover and the engine block will be cleaned, the timing chain cover, and the gasket installed while following the correct sequence of tightening, for a fully completed, the removal steps will be reversed with pipe sealant to the cylinder head plugs to shut oil leakage, the engine oil, and the filter will be replaced as well the cooling system.
