On 1997 and later models, the HVAC unit must be removed from the vehicle in order to remove either the heater or the AC evaporator core. To remove the heater core, first have the air conditioning system evacuated and the refrigerant recovered. Then, disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system. Disconnect the heater hoses at the heater core inlet and outlet, as well as the two refrigerant lines at the firewall. Disconnect the heater control cables and defroster duct. On 1997 and later models, remove the instrument panel. Disconnect the housing attaching nuts from the studs on the engine compartment side of the firewall. Tilt the heater housing assembly down and pull it to the rear to remove it from the vehicle. Finally, remove the retaining screws on the housing assembly and pull the heater core straight out of the housing. To install the heater core, follow the reverse order of removal, making sure to refill the cooling system and check for proper operation and leaks. To remove the evaporator core, first have the air conditioning system discharged and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 1997 and later models, drain the cooling system. Disconnect the inlet and receiver/drier-to-evaporator hoses. Remove the retaining screws, hose clamps, and dash grommet. On older models, lower the evaporator housing from the instrument panel's lower edge. On 1997 and later models, remove the HVAC housing from the firewall and release the clips securing the upper and lower halves of the housing. Lower the evaporator housing from the dash panel and remove it from the vehicle. Finally, remove the retaining screws and pull the evaporator core straight out of the housing. To install the evaporator core, position it in the housing and install the screws. Follow the reverse order of removal to reinstall the parts, and have the air conditioning system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
