Cars built from 1995 are fitted with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) that is a system of air bags that provides protection to the driver and in models from 1997, to the front seat passenger during a frontal impact. The system features an airbag module in the steering wheel and an additional one in the instrument panel for 1997 and later models. With the 1995 versions, the system is self-contained, with the impact sensor being placed in the airbag module; the 1997 models have an impact sensor at the transmission tunnel, a clockspring by the steering wheel, and a passenger airbag above the glove box. Moreover, the side-impact air bags are also fitted from middle of the 2007 and are located in the seat back of the models. The airbag system has to be turned off whenever a person is operating close to the system parts in order to avoid accidental deployment of the airbags. For disarming the system in 1995 models pull down the driver's window, to reach the steering wheel hub, twist the cover counterclockwise and to unscrew the arming screw until it extends out one inch. To arm the system turn the arming screw clockwise until it is seated and replace the arm cap. For the cars produced in or after 1997, turn the ignition screw in the off position, unplug the negative terminal of the battery and wait for two minutes. To arm the system, join the battery terminal, switch on the car's ignition and ensure that the air bag warning lamp works properly. If the clockspring becomes uncentered it must be adjusted not to case damage to it. To remove the driver's side airbag, refer to 95300043DAC: first, disarm the system. In cars that are from 2006 and below to have the passenger side air bag removed one will have to disarm the system, remove the instrument panel then detach the air bag module using three nuts. For models from 2007 and later, the airbag system must be turned off, the grab handle and small plastic panels removed, the airbag assembly disconnected and correctly reconnected during the installation of the new component.
