    Q:
How to replace a steering knuckle on a Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure applies to 4WD and 2WD models. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel. Disconnect the tie-rod from the steering knuckle. Remove the disc brake caliper and disc. Remove the front axle hub and bearing assembly (4WD only) and remove the axle shaft. Remove the cotter pins and loosen the castellated nuts on the balljoint studs. Using a large hammer, tap the steering knuckle at the top to separate it from the balljoint studs. Carefully check the steering knuckle for cracks, especially around the steering arm and spindle mounting area. Check for elongated balljoint stud holes. Replace the steering knuckle if any of these conditions are found. If the steering knuckle is being replaced, unscrew the split ring seat from the lower mount and transfer it to the new knuckle. Also remove the disc anchor plate from the old knuckle. Check the depth of the split ring seat in the knuckle using a depth micrometer or vernier caliper. Screw the split ring seat in or out to attain the proper depth. Position the steering knuckle on the axle housing, inserting the balljoint studs into the holes in the knuckle. Install the nuts and tighten them to the specified torque. Remember to use new cotter pins. Install the axleshaft. Install the front axle hub and bearing assembly. Install the disc anchor plate (if removed previously) and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Then install the brake disc and caliper. Connect the tie-rod to the steering knuckle. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the torque.

    Q:
How to remove and install a steering knuckle on Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
First remove the wheel and get rid of the wheel lug nuts, lift the car and put it on the jackstands to eliminate the steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pin and partially undo the castellated nut without withdrawing the nut: use a small two-jaw puller to 'squeeze' out the ballstud from the knuckle. Subsequently, the brake caliper and the brake disc must be taken off and the front axle hub and bearing assembly, as well as an axle shaft, must be detached. Undo the castellated nuts on the ball joint studs with the aid of the spanner and remove the cotter pin and use of hammer to strike on the knuckle to from the ball joint studs. Check all the manufacturing defects on the steering knuckle especially the cracks and elongated ball joint stud holes, if any is noted then change it. In installation, if replacing the steering knuckle of a 1990 or later model, go straight; in case of pre-1990 models, take away the split ring seat from the lower mount and fit it on the new knuckle; also take off the disc anchor plate from the old knuckle. Check the spacing or depth of the split ring seat in the knuckle for 0.206 inch and put the steering knuckle on the axle housing, Securing it with ball joint studs and new cotter pins. Place the axle shaft into its position and follow it by the front axle hub and bearing assembly and if necessary the caliper mounting bracket to the new knuckle and tighten the bolts. Last, to complete the assembly displace the brake disc and caliper, fasten the tie-rod to the steering knuckle by tightening the nut, replace the cotter pin then place the wheel, lower the car and final tightening of the lug nuts.
