Q:
How does the Power Steering Cooler, Power Steering Hose,Power Steering Pump Work on the Power Steering System? Posted by Customer
A:
To work on the power steering system, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable from the left shock tower. For power steering fluid hoses, raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands. Lower the front suspension crossmember to access the steering gear hose connections and place a drain pan under the power steering gear. Disconnect the hose from the power steering gear and let the fluid drain into the pan. Cap the hose and the power steering gear port. Remove power steering fluid hose brackets or tie-straps as needed to remove the hose(s) and disconnect the hose(s) from the power steering pump. Remove the hose(s) from the bottom of the vehicle. For the power steering oil cooler (1996 and later models), raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands, remove the front fascia and grill, place a drain pan under the oil cooler, and drain the power steering fluid from the hoses and cooler. Unbolt the oil cooler from the front bumper reinforcement bar and reinstall it after filling the power steering fluid reservoir and bleeding the system. To remove the power steering pump, start by sucking out as much fluid as possible from the reservoir and then raise the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel and splash shield and disconnect the power steering pump hoses. Cap the hoses and ports, remove the pump adjustment slot bolt, and the bolt attaching the back of the pump to the mounting bracket. Remove the ABS hydraulic control unit heat shield (if applicable). For four-cylinder models with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor cable bracket and grommet from the right front wheel well and remove the grommet from the inner fender. Insert a socket wrench to remove the bolt attaching the top of the power steering pump front bracket. Remove the power steering pump drive belt and carefully remove the pump and mounting bracket assembly through the rear of the engine, driveaxle, and front suspension crossmember. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to use new O-rings on pressure hose fittings and lubricating them with clean power steering fluid. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir and bleed the system.
