Q:
How Do You Remove and Install Center Link,Idler Arm,Tie-Rod Ends, Drag Link, and Pitman Arm in the Independent Front Suspension on Dodge Ram 3500 and Ram 3500? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove and install tie-rod ends in the independent front suspension, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and supporting it on jackstands. Then, loosen the tie-rod end jam nut and mark the relationship of the tie-rod end to the threaded portion. Next, loosen the nut on the tie-rod end ball stud and disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle arm using a puller. If replacing the tie-rod end, unscrew it from the tie-rod and thread the new one to the marked position. After that, reconnect the tie-rod end to the steering knuckle arm and tighten the nut. Lower the vehicle, tighten the lug nuts, and have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary. For vehicles with link/coil suspension, the process is similar. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it on jackstands. Measure the distance between the adjuster tube and the center line of the ball stud for toe-in setting reference. Then, loosen the nut on the tie-rod end ball stud and disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle arm with a puller. If replacing the tie-rod end, lubricate the threaded portion with chassis grease and screw the new one into the adjuster tube to match the previous measurement. Insert the tie-rod ball stud into the steering knuckle, fully seat it, and tighten the nut. Tighten the tie-rod adjuster clamp bolts and have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if needed. To remove and install the drag link, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it on jackstands. Remove the nut from the drag link ball stud and use a puller to separate it from the Pitman arm. Then, loosen the nuts on the tie-rod end ball studs and disconnect the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckle and drag link with a puller. Installation is the reverse of removal, and all fasteners should be tightened. Have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary. For the Pitman arm removal and installation, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it on jackstands. Remove the drag link nut from the Pitman arm ball stud and disconnect the drag link from the steering knuckle arm with a puller. Remove the Pitman arm nut and washer and mark the Pitman arm and steering gear shaft for proper alignment during reassembly (if reusing the same Pitman arm). Installation is the reverse of removal, and all fasteners should be tightened. Have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if needed. To inspect the steering damper, check for fluid leakage and excessive wear in the bushing. Test the damper for smooth and constant resistance by extending and compressing it. If necessary, replace the damper by removing the mounting bolts and nuts, separating it from the tie-rod and axle, and then installing the new damper and tightening the fasteners.
