    Q:
How to remove the piston/connecting rod assemblies on Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Prior to removing the piston/connecting rod assemblies, remove the cylinder head(s), the oil pan and the oil pump. Use your fingernail to feel if a ridge has formed at the upper limit of ring travel. If ridges are present, remove them with a special tool. Turn the engine upside-down so the crankshaft is facing up. Check the end play with feeler gauges and adjust if necessary. Check the connecting rods and caps for identification marks. Loosen each connecting rod cap nut and remove the number one connecting rod cap and bearing insert. Slip a short length of hose over each connecting rod cap bolt to protect the crankshaft journal and cylinder wall. Remove the bearing insert and push the connecting rod/piston assembly out through the top of the engine. Repeat the procedure for the remaining cylinders. After removal, reassemble the connecting rod caps and bearing inserts in their respective connecting rods and install the cap nuts finger tight. Do not separate the pistons from the connecting rods.

    Q:
How to install piston/connecting rod assemblies on Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before installing piston/connecting rod assemblies, clean cylinder walls and chamfer top edges. Remove the cap from the first connecting rod, clean bearing surfaces, and place new upper bearing insert. Position piston ring gaps, lubricate with engine oil, and attach a piston ring compressor. Rotate the crankshaft, apply oil to cylinder walls, and insert the assembly into the cylinder bore. Check the connecting rod bearing oil clearance using Plastigage. If clearance is incorrect, clean bearing inserts and reapply grease. Repeat for remaining pistons/connecting rods, check for binding, and compare rod end play to specifications.

What is the purpose of slipping a hose over each connecting rod cap bolt for the Piston in the 2002 Jeep Wrangler? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is to lubricate the piston and rings with clean engine oil and to attach a piston ring compressor, leaving the skirt protruding slightly.
