Q:
What Are the Signs of a Failing Water Pump? Posted by Customer
A:
A failure in the water pump can lead to engine damage due to overheating. If there is a failure at the pump seal, coolant will leak from the weep hole(s) on the water pump. The top weep hole is located near the pulley shaft on the water pump housing. To check for a leak, remove the lower engine splash shield and use a flashlight to look for traces of coolant residue or dried coolant tracks around the weep hole(s). If the seal has leaked, it should be easily noticeable. Additionally, if the water pump shaft bearings fail, there may be a howling sound near the water pump while it's running. You can also check for shaft wear by rocking the water pump pulley up-and-down with the engine off. However, be careful not to mistake drivebelt slippage for water pump bearing failure, as it causes a squealing sound. To perform a quick water pump performance check, ensure that the coolant level is full, start the vehicle and let it warm up fully, and turn on the heater in the passenger compartment. If there is little or no heat output, it may indicate a failing water pump as coolant flow does not appear to be going through the heater core. It's important to note that a water pump may still need replacement even if it's not leaking or making any noise. The only way to be sure is to remove the pump and closely examine it for a loose or corroded impeller, a leaking shaft seal, or a worn shaft bearing.

Q:
How to Replace a Water Pump? Posted by Customer
A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Set the parking brake, raise the front of the vehicle and support securely on jackstands. Drain the cooling system. If the coolant is relatively new and in good condition, save it and reuse it. Remove the engine splash shield. For four-cylinder engines, remove the timing belt, timing belt idler pulley, camshaft sprockets, and rear timing belt cover. Remove the bolts attaching the water pump to the engine block and remove the pump. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes in the engine to remove corrosion and sealant. Remove all traces of the old seal from the sealing surfaces. Compare the new pump to the old one to ensure they're identical. Install a new O-ring seal in the groove that lines the water pump body and apply a thin film of RTV sealant to hold the seal in place during installation. Carefully mate the pump to the engine. Install the water pump bolts and tighten them to the specified torque. Do not over tighten the water pump bolts. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Refill and bleed the cooling system when done. Run the engine and check for leaks and proper operation. For V6 engines, loosen the water pump pulley bolts. Remove the drivebelt. Remove the pulley bolts. Position the pulley to allow access to the water pump mounting bolts and remove them. Rotate and move the pulley inward between the pump housing and the hub and remove the water pump and pulley together. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes in the timing case cover to remove corrosion and sealant. Remove and discard the old seal and clean the mating surfaces. Install a new O-ring seal in the groove that lines the water pump body and apply a thin film of RTV sealant to hold the seal in place during installation. Position the water pump pulley loosely between the pump housing and drive hub. Install the water pump mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified torque. Do not over tighten the mounting bolts. Position the pulley onto the drive hub and install the mounting bolts finger tight. Install the drivebelt. Tighten the pulley bolts to the specified torque. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Refill and bleed the cooling system when done. Run the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.

Q:
How do you install a new water pump for the 2008 Jeep Liberty? Posted by Customer
A:
Remove the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts and the accessory drivebelt bracket and timing belt. Remove the water pump bolts and detach it from the engine. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes, and compare the new pump to the old one to ensure they're identical. Remove any old gasket material and clean the engine and new water pump mating surfaces. Apply ATV sealant to the new water pump O-ring for four-cylinder engines or to the gasket mating surface for 3.7L V6 engines. Attach the pump and O-ring/gasket to the engine and tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern. For 4.0L engines, install a new O-ring seal in the water pump groove and carefully mate the pump to the engine. Install the water pump mounting bolts and tighten them. Reinstall all parts that were removed for access to the pump, refill the cooling system, and check for leaks.
