    What is the purpose of the camshaft position sensor and how is it replaced on Jeep Cherokee? Posted by Customer

    The camshaft position sensor, along with the crankshaft position sensor, determines the timing for fuel injection on each cylinder. It is a Hall-Effect device located on top of the oil pump drive and triggered by a pulse ring. The sensor can be replaced without removing the oil pump drive assembly, but if it needs to be removed, the mounting flange must be marked or the camshaft position sensor reset with a scan tool. To replace the sensor, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the two mounting bolts. If removing the oil pump drive assembly, position the number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke. Insert an alignment pin through the holes in the sensor base and pulse ring. Mark the position of the oil pump drive mounting flange base to the engine block. Remove the oil pump drive assembly and discard the O-ring. Reposition the number one piston at TDC if the crankshaft has been moved. Turn the pulse ring until the holes align and install the alignment pin. Insert the oil pump drive into the engine block and align the marks made earlier. Install the oil pump drive hold-down clamp and tighten the bolt. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.
