    Installation and Repair Tips
    Q:
What steps should be followed to remove and install a transfer case on Dodge Dakota? Posted by Customer
    A:
When starting this procedure, engage the transfer case in 2WO or AWD if it is not already engaged. Firstly, unplug the car battery cable from negatively charged terminal. Lift the car and set it on stands; then remove the skid plate if installed. Remove all the lubricant from the transfer case and unbolt all vacuum/vent hose connections and electrical connections of the transfer case. Removal of the transfer case shift motor and sensor connectors, and the front and rear driveshafts. In some of the models it is perhaps required to remove the rear crossmember of the concerned car. Place transmission jack under the transmission and transfer case passing the safety chain around the transfer case. Located at the transfer case-to-transmission bolts/nuts and provide all necessary wires and hoses disconnected, than take the transfer case and its jack towards backward but must maintain a level position to the vehicle. After the input shaft is clear again it is now safe to lower the transfer case and take it off under the vehicle. For installation of the gasket, aluminium gasket material must be entirely stripped from the rear of the transmission, new RTV sealant must be applied only to both sides of the gasket and this gasket put ideally on the mating surface. Once the transfer case is clamped to the jack raise it to the right height and place it in such a manner that the input shaft makes contact with the output shaft of the transmission, and aligning as required. Replace and torque the transfer case-to-transmission bolts/nuts, remove the safety chains and also take off the jack supporting the transfer case. If removed, first install the rear crossmember and then, using the transmission jack, have it removed. Reconnect all vacuum and vent lines and install as necessary and reconnect all electrical connectors. Join the shift motor and sensor electrical connectors of the transfer case, add transfer case lubricant if required, and inspect the transmission lubricant level if present. If the vehicle is equipped with skid plate, then install it and after that take out the jackstands; put down the vehicle; connect the negative terminal of the battery and perform a road test to check whether it works properly and if there is any leakage or not.
